In this post we’re going to take a look at the differences between the P90x and the Insanity.
I decided to put up this comprehensive guide because it seemed that there weren’t any definitive resources online that outline the differences in each program.
In this article, you will find the overall impressions of each program, as well as the major differences between the two workouts. This should help you make an educated decision to which workout is best for you.
What Makes me Credible?
I am a personal trainer who has completed both workouts in full.
Tony Horton is the creator and teacher of P90x. This charismatic & pretty funny dude will lead you through the workouts. Right off the bat, I got the feeling that this was going to be fun & not your typical boring workout video – boy was I right.
With the P90x workout you’re going to focus on metabolic stress aka “muscle confusion” as he’ll call it. This isn’t anything new to working out, but he has put together a system that is deeply rooted in science. It’s pretty telling that he put in great lengths to develop the program and really took into consideration various parameters of physical fitness.
- 90 day program
- 12 DVDs – each DVD will hit on a different part of the body. These include:
Chest & Back, Plyometrics (explosive jumping moves & cardio), Shoulders & Arms, Yoga X, Legs & Back, Kenpo X (high intensity cardio), X Stretch, Core Synergistics, Chest, Shoulders & Triceps, Cardio X, Ab Ripper X,
- Nutrition plan that works in tandem with P90x.
- Fitness guide so you aren’t completely lost when you get the program.
- There are some recommended additional tools you will need to do the full workout. These are highly recommended otherwise you won’t get the full workout in. These include a chin up bar, Resistance bands, and dumbbells. Other tools you may want to get are a yoga/exercise mat, push up stands, and a heart rate monitor.

My Thoughts on P90X & Shit You Need to Know
I was able to complete the program and was super happy with the results. Basically you can go two routes…you can either do a lot of reps, which will tone you. Or you can use it to really build up some muscle. Since I’m not overweight, I used it to gain muscle and just as a solid workout to get the blood flowing!! I was able to add 10 pounds of muscle as well as sculpt my abs.
- More strength based training; there’s cardio – but it’s not the focus of the program. You will lose fat but it turns into lean muscle.
- You need additional items like free weights in order to maximize the workout.
- Ab Ripper X is my favorite part of the program. Best ab workout I’ve ever done..hands down.
- It’s a hard workout – especially if you actually follow it. I recommend being somewhat in shape before going at the P90x.
**Important to note that a lot of people say that you can’t build muscle with P90x, however this couldn’t be further from the truth. It all depends how you workout. If you’re using lighter weights and more reps, you’re going to become leaner – not gain muscle. If you’re using bigger weights and less reps, you’re going to bulk up. Tony says so in the video, but it seems people are still complaining about not being able to bulk up when it’s just them not listening to Tony and working out wrong.

Shaun T is the creator of Insanity. This dude has been at it for a while. He’s like the ultimate guru behind getting a nice body and he’s sure to let you know it. Although Shaun isn’t as entertaining as Tony (personal opinion), he is still the man. Like Insanity, there is a true science behind the workout, which makes me happy. It’s not like this dude rolled out of bed and just threw together this workout – he has supposedly spent years putting this workout together.

My Thoughts on Insanity
I actually did Insanity before I completed the P90x. It is definitely a tough workout, but not as tough as the P90x. If you’re someone who doesn’t workout, you’d still be able to complete the workout.
In terms of results, I was able to finally see all of my abs after this workout! Sorry – not sure exactly how many pounds I lost with this workout 🙁 – but if I were to guess I lost about 15-20.
If you want to lose weight or improve your cardio, this is going to be the workout for you. In terms of cardio and burning calories, you’re going to find this is far superior than the P90x. The reason is, is that the workouts are all cardio based.

- It’s only a 2 month program so it’s relatively quick & not too long
- Best for those looking to lose weight
- Program is very beginner friendly.

The Major Differences
When comparing the two, there are a couple major differences that you should be aware of if you haven’t caught on already.
1) P90x is an all around program meant for building muscle & getting ripped while mixing in some cardio. On the other hand, Insanity is much more cardio based. It is geared towards losing weight.
2) P90x requires from additional equipment where as Insanity doesn’t.
3) P90x is more difficult and complex. While Insanity is more beginners friendly.
Which One Do I Like More?
I personally like P90x more. Like I said above, I am more into building muscle than losing weight. Not to toot my own horn, but I’m a pretty fit dude, so I am focused on sculpting my body & adding muscle mass that doesn’t make me look like a meathead. With that said, I was personally able to see more results THAT I WANTED with P90x, but really it just depends on your body type and what you want to achieve.
I also like Tony a lot more. That dude is hilarious & I found a lot more motivation working out with him than Shaun. I think he’s a better trainer-but that’s just my two cents.
Decision Time – What’s Going to Be Better For You?
Overall, both programs are fantastic.
You need to ask yourself one question..What do you want to accomplish with this workout? Muscle up and lose weight? Or slim down?
If you want to gain muscle mass, get ripped, and drop a few pounds then you want to go with P90x.
If you want to lose weight & slim down then you want to go with insanity.
